ASV RC50 TRACK DRIVE AND UNDERCARRAGE REBUILD

Problems with ASV RC50 TRACK DRIVE.

Undercarriage Idler Wheels and Stub Axle Replacement.

When this machine arrived as the workshop there appeared to be nothing wrong with it. The new tracks looked good and the idler wheels stood straight.

After removing the tracks a very different picture came to light. The front and rear most idler wheels had a hard time.

The front idler wheels just fell off, no need to free the lock-nut or remove the bearings!

The second photo shows how dry the axle ran, no grease here at all. All that was left was the bearing cones, still held in place by the damaged lock-nut.

Things were not looking much better for the rear, a closer look and the grease caps show sever signs of stress.


One grease cap had gone missing in action, common problem.

Removing another grease cap a very contaminated picture emerged. The rear seal had given way and water and sludge had worked there way into the wheel housing.

Also note that the stub axle is very badly damaged close to the undercarriage.  This is something to pay close attention to as this is the sealing face used by the axle seal to keep contamination out and grease in.



In the next picture notice how the inner seal has come away from the wheel hub. This has allowed dirt to contaminate the bearings.

To facilitate this repair the entire undercarriage had to be removed. This was complicated when the carriage seized on the suspension arms and refused to slide off the pivots. A special puller was fabricated to do the job.

Next the new parts arrive, notice the new stub axles, this is how they are sold.
All that needs to be done is extract the old stubs and weld in the new.




New idler wheels ready to go, they are sold in a kit, wheel-bearings-seals-and lock-nut.


Simply unpack the wheel, no need to grease as they are all pre-greased. Slide the wheel on making sure the grease seal and large cleaning washer are in place. Torque the nut to spec and fit the new grease cap and cir-clip.

Next step, all the new idler wheels are fitted except the front outer, this makes it easier to install the track later.

The pivot axles were cleaned up before they were assembled. The grease flow was checked in the channels. Poor greasing or blocked channels causes the pivot axles to seize, creating a host of other problems.

Observation  : Much can be done in the way of preventative maintenance. When we see damage to grease caps, wheels making an unusual noise, or any wobble or free travel in any of the idler wheels,,,,,,,,, then stop and repair. This can save on big major repairs soon down the track.

 "A stitch in time can save nine" 

In this case it can save you time and a lot of money.

Lastly, when the grease does not go in, or the nipple is blocked,  there is a problem.  Rectify it as soon as possible.
